I was called in to teach an actor and a key background player several lines in a foreign language for an upcoming episode of CBS' Criminal Minds (I don't want to give away the plot by naming the language). The production had the lines translated into the foreign language, then I recorded a native speaker reciting the lines, which I then taught to the actor by phone. I went to their set the following day to coach the actor, as well as teaching the lines to a background player.
Memphis, the musical I coached at La Jolla Playhouse, is in previews for a Broadway opening next month.
Variety, the show business bible, acknowledged my work on the Liberian accents in the Center Theater Group's Eclipsed, now playing at the Kirk Douglas Theater. Bob Verini wrote, "with kudos to dialect coach Joel Goldes." Leigh Kennicott also wrote, on StageHappenings.com, "Of special note is Joel Goldes’ (dialect) coaching: the accents are intelligible without being distracting. And in BroadwayWorld.com, Amber Cassel wrote, "The dialect brings yet another distinct layer of realism, thanks to coach Joel Goldes' efforts."
